Some people feel like the label “whitening” which is on many beauty products is not the best way to label it. In the article by Refinery 29, “The Politics of Skin Brightening” we can see how the word “whitening” is a very controversial word when it comes to beauty products. In Uganda, more and more women feel like it is a need to bleach their skin to fit in with the stereotypes from their country which believe that fairer skin portrays more beauty and wealth. Since the process is very harmful, women must be quite keen on having their skin bleached and looking fairer. When she spoke to the people who were doing this, most of their responses were that being fair-skinned just looked better. Anne Ackerman, who is a photographer in Uganda, researched a certain beauty parlor where a lot of people went to bleach their skin. If you are not able to think independently all of your wealth and happiness might get taken away from you by people who boss you around. I wouldn’t give up my ability to think independently because I think that your thoughts are the most important thing about you. If there was only one person who was not pretty, people would most likely make fun of them or discriminate against themĤ- Would you give up your ability to think independently in exchange for being happy, beautiful, perpetually healthy, and rich? If everyone was being turned pretty, I personally would also like to be turned pretty because I would be categorized as different and “ugly” as we saw in The Eye Of The Beholder. If I were to be made pretty, I wouldn’t be unique and I wouldn’t be myself. If I had the chance to be made pretty, I wouldn’t take it because I feel like it would take away a piece of my identity. I think that this happens because people look at someone who is more attractive as more important because they want to impress that certain person.ģ- If you had the chance to be made pretty, would you take it? Everyone has something that stands out about them or that is unique to them in some way and if everyone was pretty, nobody would be able to see who you really are. I personally think that if everyone was pretty, nobody’s identity would be unique to who they are and to their personality. Or do you think that this sort of surgery is dangerous to identity ? Did you ever agree with both ideas? Or neither? The main character is living in a dystopian society where people who are different are treated badly. In the series, The Eye Of The Beholder, we see a very important issue that occurs evidently in today’s world.
